Important information

 

This project consists of 4 tasks that focus on the following units:

Unit 1: Principles of music performance and production

Unit 3: Music industry and professional practice

Unit 4: Critical and contextual awareness for music performance and production

 

Project aim:

Music Technology students:

To record a song within the recording studio as a sound engineer/producer

 

Music Students:

To perform professionally to an audience as a member of an ensemble

      • Project hand-in date: *03/10/25 *at 16.00

      • Upload evidence to the relevant "Project " page of your “WIX" website  

      • Use “Teams- assignment'' to hand-in a link to your website. This must be done by the hand-in date.​

      • Primary and secondary sources must be referred to in a Webliography and/or Bibliography.

      • If applicable, all in-text citations must be referenced.

      • Webliography and/or Bibliography. must be in Harvard format 

      • For each project you will be asked by your tutor to sign an authentication form that confirms that the work you have submitted for assessment is your own and that you have not copied it from someone else or allowed another candidate to copy from you.

      • A late hand-in will automatically be referred.

      • Students who hands in late or provides insufficient evidence to meet all of the assessment criteria will be referred.

      • All referred work re-submitted will be capped at satisfactory. 

      • Students re-submitted work that does not meet the assessment criteria will receive a Fail grade.

      • Remember collation of all evidence is your responsibility, this includes audial and visual recordings.

 

Guitarist

Task 1

This task addresses:

Learning outcomes: Unit 1: L01, Unit 3: L01 & Unit 4: L01 & L02

Assessment criteria: Unit 1: 1.1, Unit 3: 1.1, Unit 4: 1.1, 2.1

 

Music Technology students:

Choose at least 3 music performances, these could be any or all of the following:

 

• A live performance of a band or musician(s) in any environment

• A performance of a band or musician(s) within a music video

• A performance of a band or musician(s) within a recording studio

 

* Please confirm your choices with your tutor before you go ahead with Task 1*

 

  1. Analyse your 3 performance/songs in production terms, which could be:

    • Genre – the musical elements/techniques that make up the genre and any cultural context

    • Tempo

    • Effects used – Reverb, delay, chorus, flange, phaser, pitch shift etc.

    • Mixing - level and pan of instruments

    • Compression

    • Arrangement

    • Rhythm

    • Harmony

    • Key signature

    • Time signature

  2. Critically compare your 3 choices i.e how do they differ from each other? How similar are they to each other? Remember to use the relevant music production terms, such as the one's above, when writing your critical comparisons.

  1. You will analyse each performance/song in performance terms these could be:

• Stage presence/image portrayal

• Instrumentation (instruments and who plays them)

• Relationships with other musicians

• Audience expectation/relationship

• Musicianship (how well they play)

• Arrangement

• Equipment used such as stage set-up and layout

​

   2.Critically compare your 3 choices i.e how do they differ from each other? How similar are they to each other? Remember to use the relevant music performance terms, such as the one's above, when writing your critical comparisons.

Task 2

This task addresses:

Learning outcomes: Unit 1: L01, L02 Unit 3: L01, L02 & Unit 4: L01 & L02

Assessment criteria: Unit 1: 1.1,1.2 Unit 3: 1.1, 2.1 Unit 4: 1.2, 2.2

 

 

Music Technology students:

 

Within recording studio lessons carry out practical exercises and theoretical research. This will involve practicing recording techniques for the recording of a band or musician/s including how you have considered Health and Safety. Please provide evidence of this by filming your recording practice, explaining the process/outcome for each session along with evidence of associated research and a recording plan as.

 

To show that you have considered the health and safety aspects of this task please download and complete this H & S test:

The recording plan could include the following:

 

Date/place of recording

Band/musician name

Song(s) title

Style/genre of song

Who plays which instrument?

Recording order of instruments

Equipment list

Recording techniques, mic choices and positioning

Student roles within the recording session

Music Performance students:

​

Within your rehearsal studio sessions carry out practical and theoretical research. This will involve practicing performance techniques for a live performance, please provide evidence of this by filming every rehearsal practice explaining/critical evaluating the process/outcome for each rehearsal along with evidence of associated research as well as a set-list and equipment list needed for a performance.

Music Recording

Task 3: 

This task addresses:

Learning outcomes: Unit 3: LO3

Assessment criteria: Unit 3: 3.1, 3.2

Music Technology students:
 

Within recording studio lessons record a band or musician(s) following your recording plan. You will be working within a group and each student will have a role(s) with the recording sessions. Please film the sessions as evidence.

 

You must upload this task to your Wix website.

 

Hand in the following evidence for this task: on your Wix website:

 

  • Video evidence of your recording sessions with times/dates/location

  • Written document that explains all of the recording sessions

  • Logic sessions bounced down in MP3 format only (Wixsite only accepts MP3)

  • Hand in Logic sessions to Simon Atkinson/Mario Gazi, by sharing them on Onedrive.

Music performance students:
 

Within rehearsal studio lessons take part in a collaborative performance, performing at least three songs. Your tutor Mario Gazi will inform you of the date/time of the performance. Please film the performance as evidence.

This task addresses:
 

Learning outcomes: Unit 1: LO2, Unit 4: LO1, LO2
 

Assessment criteria: Unit 1: 2.1 Unit 4: 1.3, 2.2
 

Music Technology students:

 

Evaluate and reflect upon Task 2 and 3 of this Project.  

Evaluate the following:

  • Your role,Was it effective?

  • What went well, what did not go so well?

  • The group, were you all effective? What went well, what did not go so well?

  • Was your contribution to task 1 and 2 effective?

  • Did everything go to plan?

  • Did you change the plan at anytime within the recording(s)? What were the changes?

  • Did you and/or the group record professional quality recordings?

  • What could you and/or the group do better next time?
